An immersive experience combining contemporary music and lighting. The audience “sneaks” into a scenery with perspective and is encouraged to interpret the abstract stimuli of sound and light in their own way. By turns one can discern outlines of humans and objects or sources of light, movement or stasis, or the light may obscure everything completely. Musicians switch positions and sides, get closer or further away; the sound constantly changes our perception of the space.

The programme includes two works in their Greek premiere and three Greek works commissioned by the Athens Epidaurus Festival: Stirrings Still ΙΙ (2008) by Rebecca Saunders, Standing (1973) by Jo Kondo, Translucencies by Michalis Paraskakis, And Then She Saw Him by Nikos Ioakeim and Hide Behind the Curtain by Eleni Ralli.

The hide, the flayed skin removed from the animal after death; the empty shell that once protected a sea creature; and the Tabakaria—the former industrial tanneries—share something in common. They are empty shells that once hosted a form of life, an activity. One can find all three in the historic neighborhood of Chania, by the sea, where in the abandoned and time-worn buildings of the tanneries, forgotten skins still lie unused.

In this mysterious neighborhood, transforming into a tourist attraction, TETTTIX, in collaboration with Aliki Chiotaki, present a performance of unexpected sounds and video. The area’s contrasting character—on one side the industrial remnants of a bygone era, and on the other the natural world with the sea, rocks, and tamarisks—inspires TETTTIX to interpret works of contemporary music where harsh, industrial sonorities meet the muffled, languid hum of the sea and the chirring of summer insects. The video interacts with the surroundings, the music, and rhythm, forming a sequence of expressionist images.

A sound installation-walk invites the audience to explore the neighborhood, learn historical details about the leather-processing craft, and enter one of the only two still-functioning Tabakaria. The narratives will be accompanied by sounds and music created in an educational workshop with students from the Music School, the Venizeleio Conservatory of Chania, the Municipal Philharmonic, and local choirs.

Chemical elements: African rhythms, Japanese theatre, the zygies of Macedonia, the music of Peru, punk and metal.
Tools: mockery, rawness, introspection, ecstasy.
A performance that engages with the “other”.

Just as metallurgy fuses different elements, this performance “melds” diverse musics, heterogeneous texts, and stage actions into a narrative without predetermined meaning. The common denominator of all elements is human nature: fate, memory, love, struggle.

Stamatis Pasopoulos, drawing inspiration from the ecstatic zygies (folk duos) of Macedonia, creates a new kind of “linkage” between the double act of zournas and daouli.

Beat Furrer binds the sound of flute and double bass into a single instrument, inspired by the Pan flute of Peruvian music, while in Dmitri Kourliandski’s work, music is born out of indistinct sounds, beats, and creaks.

Iannis Xenakis sets to music the scene of Cassandra from Aeschylus’ Agamemnon, with the baritone performing both the role of the Chorus and that of Cassandra in a schizophrenic dialogue, constantly shifting vocal register.

Nikos Galenianos arranges Metallica’s Battery for the ensemble TETTTIX, and finally, Ofir Klempere’s punk-infused work demolishes all pretense of seriousness.

Immersion in sound and light.

TETTTIX collaborates with light designer and artist Panagiotis Tomaras for this immersive experience.

Taking Giacinto Scelsi, a composer of mysterious spirituality, as its starting point, the performance follows a path of music and light to the “godfather” of ambient, Brian Eno.

TETTTIX and Tomaras stage an ambient performance in which the spectators-listeners are left free to immerse themselves in the music or simply to follow it from a distance. Every composer calls forth different expressive means: imperceptible changes made by increasing or decreasing the density of the musical material or emphasizing a particular sound colour and instrumental register.

Guided by the music’s atmosphere, its ‘minimalist’ aesthetic and its impact, which moves between the hypnotic and the stimulating, Panagiotis Tomaras plays with the fundamental qualities of light. Using reflections and gradations of intensity and colour, he weaves subtle optical illusions and creates a singular environment for each work.
